Rupert came to the reserve in July 2021, following a major poaching incident in June 2021 on the reserve in which he was born. During this poaching incident, nine rhinos were shot and killed, and sadly during the attack Malala, Rupert’s mum, was also shot. The bullet missed her spine by 1cm, but she luckily has full movement and no bone damage. However, the incident made her very stressed and aggressive. Upon release, she charged from the game truck, leaving Rupert to fend for himself. Rupert showed great strength and determination to find his mum, searching the reserve in an area he doesn’t know, finally meeting up with Leo and Madolo and then Sally and Nico for comfort and support. Rupert is such a strong and determined rhino, and he reminds us everyday to keep pushing and battling for these incredible creatures who never stop fighting themselves.
