Marula

Gender: Male
Date of Birth: 5th May 2024
Mother: Malala
Father: Sweet Chilli
Sibling: Rupert

Marula’s story is a story of success and hope. His mother Malala arrived at Mankwe Wildlife Reserve with a bullet in her shoulder. Miraculously she survived a poaching attack on another reserve and was brought to us with her calf Rupert in the dead of night. She was in pain and stressed but after rehab and a lot of tender loving care, she settled well within the reserve.

There was great excitement when she was spotted mating with Sweet Chilli in August 2022 and 18 months later, she was spotted with a bouncing baby boy. This strong little boy has been named Marula by Marcia and Robert Woodland, who have been long-time friends and donors of ERC. They chose to name him Marula after the Marula Tree which is abundant on the reserve. The trees are beautiful, strong and live for hundreds of years. Therefore, the name represents strength, longevity, and beauty.

Sweet Chilli has become a first-time father and is very proud of his firstborn. Malala is a calm and mature mother who has decided the safest place to look after Marula is around Lynne’s house so she has the privilege of seeing him every day.
